True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but when something feels seriously wrong, we’re here for you. If you’re in severe pain or dealing with an appliance problem you can’t manage on your own, call our office and we’ll get you in as soon as possible.
You might be surprised how much you can handle at home in the meantime. If a piece has come loose and you can remove it, put it in a small bag and bring it to your next appointment. If a wire is poking you, put a small piece of soft wax on the sharp spot. If a wire has slid to one side, you can gently push it back into place with the eraser end of a pencil or a pair of needle-nose pliers.
Even after you’ve handled the immediate discomfort, please call us so we can schedule a proper repair. Leaving a damaged appliance untreated for too long can affect your progress and extend your treatment time.
Loose Brackets or Bands
If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it’s irritating you. Call us to schedule a repair appointment.
Poking Wires
If a wire is poking the inside of your cheek or gum, dry the area and apply wax. You can also use the eraser end of a pencil to gently tuck the wire out of the way. If nothing helps, call us and we’ll take care of it quickly.
Lost Elastics or Ligatures
If you lose a rubber band or a small tie, don’t worry. Just let us know at your next visit or call if you’re concerned about the timing.
