Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most widely used orthodontic treatment, and today’s version is smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than anything from a generation ago. Patients of all ages choose metal braces to get a straight, healthy smile that lasts.

What Braces Are Made Of

Traditional metal braces are made from high-quality stainless steel or titanium. There are three main components:

  • Brackets: Small pieces bonded directly to each tooth using a special adhesive.
  • Archwire: The thin metal wire that connects each bracket and applies gentle, consistent pressure to guide teeth into position.
  • Ligature Elastics (rubber bands): The colored ties that hold the archwire to the brackets. We change these at each appointment, and they come in a wide range of colors if you want to have a little fun with it.

How Braces Work

Once your braces are placed, they apply steady, gentle pressure that slowly moves your teeth over time. As the wire straightens, it guides your teeth along with it. We make small adjustments at each visit to keep things progressing on schedule. The total treatment time depends on your specific case, but most patients are in braces for one to three years.

Are Metal Braces Right for You?

Metal braces are highly effective for treating a wide range of alignment issues, from mild crowding to more complex bite problems. They’re also the most affordable option in most cases. If you’re wondering whether metal braces are the right fit for your smile, we’ll help you figure that out at your consultation.
