For Teens

Braces, retainers, and everything else you want to know about orthodontics.

You’ve heard the three words: “You need braces.” But honestly? It’s not as big a deal as it sounds. Braces today are smaller, more comfortable, and come in way more styles than your parents ever had. Some teens even look forward to picking their band colors.

How Long Will I Need Braces?

It depends on a few things:

  • Whether you had any early orthodontic treatment, which can make the current phase shorter
  • What needs to be corrected and how much movement is involved
  • How consistently you wear elastics and follow your care instructions

Most teens are in treatment for one to three years. We’ll give you a more specific estimate once we’ve taken a look at your teeth and bite.

Taking Care of Your Braces

The biggest thing you can do to keep treatment on track is to take care of your appliances and come to every appointment. Brush after every meal, floss daily, and stay away from hard and sticky foods that can break brackets. If something feels off, call us. A small fix now is always better than a delay later.

Clear Aligners for Teens

If the look of metal braces isn’t your thing, clear aligners might be a great fit. They’re removable, nearly invisible, and let you eat whatever you want. Ask us at your consultation whether aligners are a good option for your case.

The Finish Line

Treatment ends, but the results last. When the braces come off, you’ll get a retainer to keep everything in place. Wear it as directed and your new smile will stay exactly where we put it.
